This is the start page for software information and usage for the Printrbot. The software on this page has been used to create files for the Printrbot, however a more extensive list not created by the Printrbot Wiki team can be found here: Useful Software Packages (RepRap)

CAD Software (Drafting/Designing)

This software is used to make a .stl output file to be used by CAM software.

  • Cinema 4D - mesh modeling, very powerful but harder to use than parasolid modelers
  • Alibre - parasolid modeling (includes Cubify Invent which is a $50 version that provides 90% of the capabilities of Alibre)
  • Google Sketchup -
Export to .stl plugin for Sketchup - export .stl to mm

CAM Software (Slicing)

These programs take a .stl file and generate GCode. GCode is used by the Printrbot to tell the machine how to print the object you designed.

KISSlicer is a fast, easy-to-use, cross-platform program that takes 3D files (STL) and generates path information (G-code) for a 3D Printer. KISSlicer takes a simple approach to slicing - its very fast and its tool paths are clean and logical. the resulting gcode is very concise. parameters take some getting used to if you've been using other slicers but provide a lot of control if you want it, and if not will still do a good job.
Useful modification for faster processing - Using slic3r with pronterface
Richrap has a thorough guide to Slic3r here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

CAM Software (Previewing)

These programs preview the sliced GCode showing the toolpaths; useful for checking how a model will print without wasting plastic.

CAM Software (Printing)

These programs have configuration files for different printers, IE Makerbot,RepRap, and others. Brook and the Printrbot team have not released the configuration files YET. Brook and the Printrbot team will most likely be utilizing the Printrun(Pronterface) software to send commands to the printer.

Use the downloads link to get Printrun -
This is one of the harder programs to install, follow the directions under "INSTALLING DEPENDENCIES" on the Printrun site
Windows: The precompiled version at is the easiest way to get up and running. All the dependencies are included in it. As of the March 2012 update it uses Slic3r by default.
You will also need to install to get Windows to recognize the Printrboard.
Mac Users: follow the instructions at

Firmware (Printrbot Electronics)

The initial batch of printrbots shipped with Marlin 1.0.0 RC2. There may or may not be firmware updates for the electronics provided with the Printrbot
