What did you print today?

Postby Mochaboy » 2013-Aug-Tue-00-Aug

I'm working my way backwards, but I wanted to keep a running log of everything everyone's printing - who knows it might be something useful to someone else that didn't even know that part existed :)

I'll start.

I was at a radio controlled FPV meet here in the Northeast just recently and I can honestly say that I spent 3/4 of my time there showing people the printer and the remaining time flying :)

The girl I printed that for reported back later that yes - it is a working shotglass :)

Supports/rafts on the bowden mount?

Love to see a build log on that process when you're through it :)

You're correct sir! :) I wanted them to be as clean and precise as possible.

And yes, I'll most definitely put a build log together with the Bowden. :) I have something special planned for that... A combo "thing" for multiple solutions. ;)

I need to be a little more thoughtful about the parts I'm making and make sure this thing doesn't end up looking like a junkyard scrapper. Very interested to read your report on the printing capabilities with that setup.

The Y Axis runs smoother than before, but I have tiny filament stripes/threads .. ( I don't know the correct english word ) between gaps on the printbed. But this could also be a filament or temperature problem ...

I've read that's part of the challenge of bowden extruders. Because of the distance between the filament and the teflon tube, the extruder motor has to retract faster and more filament. If it's leaving wisps and strings, it's probably just a few degrees to hot..I'd say drop your temps 3-5 degrees and observe.

This is one hard print! My attempt at the Bamboo Basket. The catch: NO SUPPORT MATERIAL. I wanted to kill the print a few times because of the horror, but endured. I'm surprised it even turned out recognizable. ;)

Man, I don't know... :| I don't know if the Z Axis Stiffiner I added is putting excess tension on the bot, or what... I've not changed my Z Axis rod yet (still waiting on it to arrive, after 15 days), so it's not that... Between this and the "out of square" print problem I'm having, I'm getting a little discouraged with the bot. In the back of my mind the woodworker in me keeps talking about wood movements with humidity/temperature and how that wouldn't be a great idea for a precision instrument's structural pieces. But the optimist in me says "But hey, other people have the Jr. and are getting good results, so it's probably not the wood." :? Maybe when my M8 rod finally arrives, I'll take a week or two to do a complete tear-down of the bot and fabricate some of the wood pieces out of aluminum.

Here's another photo of the Gnome with some objects for size-comparison.

Re: What did you print today?

don't be dissin junior!!!

.30 layer height
60mm/s speed across the board except 1st layer 30mm
200/190 on MakerGeek nuclear green PLA
Aluminum Printbed was at about 50c

On a side note - you wouldn't believe what I just tried to use as a surface finish...

So there I was - 3am in the morning, couldn't sleep...I decide to take apart some 1.2ghz receivers and solder extensions into the port to hook up a 5.8 transmitter to it. My base station operates at 5.8ghz so doing so allowed me to receive a video signal wirelessly.

Anyway - I go to grab my little bottle of no clean flux, and immediately started cursing at the sticky/tacky lid. It doesn't take a lot, but once you get a little of this flux on a surface, it just doesn't go away until you wipe it away with alchohol.

And then it hit me! Flux is resin, and resin is sticky, flux just happens to be wonderful for high temperature applications where you need something to stick a little, but not TOO much.

This is what I using
Chipquick No Clean Paste Flux

This figure was the proof of concept for that theory. I printed the base layer at 30mm/s completely unattended. Previously I couldn't get it to stick unless it was printing at 5mm and even then it was a struggle. I would have to babysit the first layer with a pair of tweezers and corners always always always came loose (even with the glue stick).

I need to put together video so you can see the difference between clean/heated/resin'd + heat but the "stick factor" was striking. I'm finding that with just enough heat (about 50c), I'm getting awesome adhesion...but only time will tell.

Oooh, sorry Mochaboy. The comment was for mrsamnc (you get derp when got more than 4 screens up). As for the printer being down...

Don't forget to PM(prevented maintenance) your bot, guys. Tighten those lose nuts, Chapstick that z rod, and Buy Good Filament!

You don't want to be printing dust-bunnies, like I did today.

Prototypes for robot brackets I will mill in aluminum. And a good thing -- one of them had the wrong circular hole count, so I'll have to fix that! (Would have been a lot more annoying to find out after I had cut it from aluminum...)

I design these in Inventor, so they're not on Thingiverse. That being said -- Inventor exports perfectly fine STLs with no intersecting triangles or bad normals or open shapes, which is more than you can say for pretty much all Thingiverse objects.

Partially offtopic: could you briefly summarize the differences between AutoCAD vs Inventor and, if know them, SolidEdge (free for students) and Solidworks?

PrintrBot LCv2 and ABS. Flipped PCB with alu 3mm plate and then kapton on top, plus hairspray. Three paper rings ("frames") between PCB and alu plate, to compensate for the bulging PCB when warm.
Sunflower oil between PCB and alu plate to try to improve heat conduction (better than air anyway!)

I've only used AutoCad a little bit. AutoCad is at the core a 2D program. Inventor is at the core a 3D program. Inventor lets you easily take many parts and assemble them into mechanical assemblies (with joints/degrees of freedom) that you can simulate for various parameters (wear, load, etc.)
Inventor also has nice interop with 3ds Max and Maya, if you're into the "sculpting" part of 3D.

I don't know the other two programs. Online, the difference between Inventor and SolidWorks seems to be like the difference between Ford and Chevy -- I'm sure either will get the job done, for almost any value of "the job" :-)

I tried Blender too, but that one does everything with meshes… there is no "intersection of circle and line", you have to approximate the circle with segments and then place correctly one node on the intersection.
It's free and actually easy, but losing the original primitive and going to the approximation immediately seems not a good idea. I start later a thread to gather opinions from people using multiple softwares.

@roh-wah
I own a copy of Solid Edge st2 (used st3, 4, and 5) and have used Solidworks (maybe) 2010. Aside from the user interface and the ready .stl support of SW, there is little diffrance from the two. Why. 3ds(solidworks) uses Siemens' (soldedge) kernel from SE. The logic and concept of out results are very close. Or, another way of looking at it is, I do this and that happens in SE, I do this in SW and the same thing happens as it would in SE, I try to do this in AutoDesk Inventor 2013 and that does not happen at all like SW or SE.

My two pennies, AutoDesk Inventor has a better work flow.

MakerBot Gnome

Very pleased with the outcome. :) I can tell the M8 has made a difference in quality.

0.2mm layer height
2 perimeters
10% infill
no support material
no brim

An experiment to see what would happen, i tried printing this one a few weeks ago at 50% and all i got was a blob,. after the recent upgrades iv done i wanted to re-try,. ill need to clean it up a bit along the edges,. but considering all the pedals are 1 wall thick,.. and there is a ton of retracts & wipes, not bad,.

Random Vase - I chose the "thick wall" file to print out for a pen cup at work. 0.4mm layer height (wasn't concerned about ultra-fine resolution). Works great as a pen cup and also serves as a conversation piece for 3d printing. :)

I printed a modification for the dust bin of the Vorwerk VR100, that usually become loose and prevents the completion of the cleaning:

I bought the best screwdriver set money could buy at Harbor Freight (tongue slightly in cheek there)...but I didn't like the blow molded case. Specifically having to pluck them out of those compression slots. I'm a big fan of vertical tool holders like mramnc's creations so I set out to build a tool tray to hold the 30 + bits.

If you haven't seen this already - http://www.harborfreight.com/33-piece-p ... 93916.html

If I'd have replicated that set in the Wiha equivalents, that would have set me back about $200...this set cost $8 and even if I strip a bit, for the cost of 2 wiha bits, I could buy another set of 33.

I went back and forth on the number of bit holders, and after using it for a while, I'm going to rework it so that it has more trays for screws, and fewer holes for bits. I'm very happy with it though :)

They have a super nice multimeter at harbor freight on sale for 20 bucks plus an extra 25% off makes it 15 bucks and it also reads temperature. Im heading down to get one asap as well as print me some good add ons for it.

I have a bunch of Li-Po batteries. I decided to make a dispenser for them.

101_0163.JPG

It works pretty good although I need to make the ledges a little longer. It holds 20 batteries and this way I can keep them rotated. I had to do it in 4 pieces. Next I am going to make some for my AA and AAA batteries.

Solid work Lemm...

I just printed off a go pro style compression bracket for my usb microscope. This will attach to the boom arm of my Amscope stereo microscope so I can video record my soldering sessions.

The equivalent usb microscope from Amscope is almost the cost of a new microscope...I bought a 3D printer so I could unlock the potential of the piles of crap I already have, so this will mount off the boom arm and be able to swing and adjust the angle :)

Being a Harry Potter fan - the Spine from Thingiverse

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27560

Prints in 6 pieces at about 3 - 4 hours each piece and then assembled w/ABS glue - I used white ABS that I got from one of the filament sales here at PrintrBot.

Had a lot of fun and frustration but is now added to our Harry Potter themed bathroom (everybody has one? right?). Goes well w/the wands, cloaks, ties, scarfs, Quaffle (not sure how to spell will have to look up and fix later), etc.

I've scaled it up to 130% (so they're only small, not tiny ;) because I had trouble with the skinny pegs of the lower part of the reducer stage, that push fit into the upper part, breaking off. I then also printed them at 0.15mm layer height, which made for much sturdier pegs than 0.3mm. After a bit of squeezing and audible creaking while turning, it now runs quite smoothly :)

BTW, the monoprice PLA gets an OK rating from me. The red is really translucent and looks orange-ish under normal light. The consistency is so-so (1.68-1.76mm), and it does tend to ooze and string a bit for me (195 degrees), in addition to a bit of warping of the cooled parts. So far, I like Matterhackers' filament better.

I do a lot of instructional videos and have a high definition camcorder that I use. Using a tripod on a desk for macro recording is extremely difficult to do, so I worked out a solution where I have a wall mount LCD, and hook up the HDMI port of the camera to the LCD - instant microscope (though I use my microscope too).

Anyway - the camera needed to be mounted on a boom arm so I could push it didn't interfere with both of my hands as I was working - and now I have it :)

Breech/feeder assemblies for airsoft guns for Mech Warfare.

The large cylinder (magazine) is aluminum, as is the barrel; the white/transparent part is a spare part gearbox, and the rest of the black are 3D printed parts from a Printrbot Simple kit.

Two of these will go on my walking robot:

Track system for my drag cables on my Printrbot Plus and my new JunkBot Printer that im almost finished with. I also printed out new 40mm fan airplane style intakes with half duct exhaust. They work great on my dual extruder. I was having issues with my upgraded fans effecting hotend temps. Now its not an issue with this new setup. Im also printing custom designed parts for a drag cable setup for the dual extruders on my plus.

Finished the slow print settings with Cura with basic user of my crop circle! Verified I was still within calibration and went on to print tensioner brackets for my simple2014. With that print O kept the the basic user interface but went up in quality to standard as it chucked out 4 new brackets.

All prints were done with starting temperature of 198 and then brought to 195. I also had all speeds for base layers at 70 percent until the twelfth layer. Don't know why but it looked solid. I then put the speeds of everything but walls to 95% while keeping the walls at 92% which was my son's suggestion. A six year old at that

I use cura on my Mac Mini on Mavericks because it just works. Hopes this helps the Mac users. I simply could not adjust the code for Repetier.

These days I try and not print just for the sake of printing. its a waste of plastic and bad for the environment. since my printers are all nicely tuned up and reliable, I limit my printing to only things I need. today one of my TV tables got on my nerves as its wobbly because one leg is shorter. so i designed and printed this. popped it on the end of the leg and no more wobble.

So I have been down lately due to my own newb abilities, so I fought back with two cool ideas, I hope. It is picture three and placed above where the inside mounting point is located. Looks pretty stealthy for the moment.

Item 1 is a predator emblem keychain from thingiverse. Made it with the clear pla from my simple kit! That is all I have used it for up to this point. Well I also did the Y axis tensioner at the same time. Again this is from thingiverse, but it looked handy.

Before that though I went into full steam upgrade mode with Jon Lawrence's 300mm no sag upgrade. Up until now I had some trouble with my Cura Settings but got it resolved and hopefully will have the motor mount done tomorrow. I am debating if I want to use the sd cards. Never tried yet.

Thanks to the no sag, mods post I now have this for the simple. Pretty sturdy as well. I will update on how it prints with the new holder. One hour print too for high quality via Cura.

I needed a new emblem for my side project. Gti vr6 and the used emblem would of cost a ton as they are rare for this setup. So I printed a new front emblem and it worked perfectly the first time around. In the pics I haven't mounted it yet but, it sits where it will go. I decided to make it out of ABS as its the perfect filament for the job. Im in the midst of painting it and then some clear coat.

No I didn't print it with plugs because it has a full projekts two body kit that doesn't use the same mounting setup as the stock grill.

Thanks Glook, I appreciate it. Once I finish the y axis, I have to tear it completely apart to etch it and prep it for paint. It still has quite a few parts that need to be printed.
