Enclosure for Unheated Spaces

Postby schlem » 2013-Mar-Tue-22-Mar

Hi

I got banished to a sad, cold garage, so I made an enclosure to keep the Schlabricator warm.

Here's a link to an Instructable I created: [unable to post link thanks to sp@m filter]

And here's where you can download the gizmacci I created to hold it all together: [unable to post link thanks to sp@m filter]

I've found that it has greatly improved the quality of my prints, and it heats up faster too!

So, either search Instructables for "3D Printer Enclosure"
And Search Thingiverse for 55065

Or contact me directly for the links.
Better yet, if someone wanted to post the links on my non-spamming behalf, that would be great.

Hope this helps someone

Printrbot original. Major mods: Y axis extended to ~8", Z extended to ~8.5". 5mm SS Z threaded rods w/ flex couplings. E3D hotend. Purchased Acetel gears. Glass bed with Elmers' purple glue stick for most prints. Top of Z axis rods have added cross structure similar to a Prusia i3.

Were you banished because of the smell of ABS?
I moved my 'bot in from the garage when I switched to nylon. It has its challenges, for sure, but smell is not one of them (search these forums for nylon for lots of ideas and debate).

Printrbot Plus operational January 2013
Brass threaded rods (5/16" X 18) & nuts for Z axis
GT2 belts & pulleys
Cable chain to reduce probability of fatigue failure in wires
E3D V5 Hot End, 0.4mm nozzle, also 0.8 and 0.25 in use occasionally
PB fan mount + 40mm fan -- using printed mount adapter, not the E3D supplied fan
Injection molded extruder gears
Optical Z "endstop" (custom designed and built)
Have used many pounds of T-Glase filament. Now also doing some work with Ninjaflex SemiFlex
Print on glass with Scotch Craft Stick or other glue stick

Yes, the wife is sensitive and has a few theories about the toxicity of ABS fumes, and, discretion being the better part of valor, I moved it out of the house. In hindsight, I could have put an intermittent (arduino or similar) fan on the enclosure and maintained a negative pressure and vented it outside. Besides, outside, I can listen to whatever Pandora station I want, at whatever volume. Small things...

The cheapest way is to use a large box - like the one my laser printer came in, and put a window on it.

That is a well written and entertaining build description. An inspiration to visit Home Depot on the 1100 mile round trip to the kid's graduation.

I've been debating building a case for my oversized printrbot. I might take this as an opportunity to do so. Thanks for the post.
