Those resolutions are just numbers that marketing throws out. Take your steps/mm and take the inverse, that's the thinnest layers you can do. Do the same for your X and Y steps/mm. The actual thickness will be something like +/- 20% between the stepper and driver's microstep tolerance, but they'll still be really thin. Also remember resolution is not accuracy, nor is it repeatability.

It may take weeks to print something substantial at the thinnest layer resolution, and you'll get the best results with the smallest orifice nozzle you can find (or make...), but you'll get the bragging rights. Search in the archives for the tiny tree frog contest if you want to know just how low you can go.

0.05mm in dead king body parts is about 2 thousandths, 20 tenths for you machinist's out there. Remember that stl's are line segments, not real arcs, and that the current slicers aren't smart enough to use arcs (which Marlin implements). Published resolution numbers are pretty much smoke when compared to actual printable models. Kinda like horsepower back in the muscle car days before the government got involved. Don't sweat the small stuff.

There's nothing particularly difficult about circular arcs... there's a Bresenham algorithm for approximating a circular path with integral steps, similar to and not much more complex than the Bresenham line-drawing algorithm.

Arguably, this might result in faster prints, since the sinusoidal accelerations can be known well in advance, so there should be less unnecessary decelerations.

It gets tough at those resolutions. the mechanical and physical inaccuracies come into play. you can smooth out the 50µm one using a lighter that uses the jet blue flame - to melt all the little strings and round out bad corners etc. not melt it, just burn off and smooth it off. but it's hard not to like the 200µm sample.

and i found out afterwards that i was printing with a partially clogged nozzle. :)

the output in person is pretty remarkable, the pictures show the objects worse than they appear in real life. the 50micron one looks close to resin printed objects -- the layer lines are nearly invisible to the eye.

extruding at 50 microns with a .4mm nozzle is a bit like smearing putty around with a spatula. i think if i swap out to a .2mm nozzle the results will be better.

one thing is for certain, the printrbot is indeed capable of this z resolution.
