PrintTray - Y axis tray printing system, greater length

Postby shilling » 2013-Dec-Fri-15-Dec

All,
I have been playing with an idea. I built a mod for my printer bot plus that replaced the y axis with a tray feed system. It consits of an assembly that fits over the existing body that has a motor mount, rollers and pinch wheels.

I have done tests with a small 4in print capability (y axis) as well as an 18in at it works well. You have to adjust the z height only with the home position and of course you have to make sure the x rods are parallel with the bed. I used my existing firmware setting and the prints came out good (A little small in the y as the steps per mm changed just a little). I am done developing it for now, I'm going to put my printer back together but wanted to share in case others would like to persue.

The rollers were made using the 13in rods and putting a 5/16in ID tube over it. I had to boil the plastic and freeze the rail to get them over each other but it worked great. My pinchers (Upper bearings)really should be spring loaded and the very first prototype had this (This is the second). I put some step grip tape (Sand paper type stuff) on the bottom of the tray to help with grip.

And of course here is a video:

How is leveling the bed? It seems like it eats up quite a bit of z axis as well. Any info on loss z axis and leveling?

Good questions,
Actually the Z height of the bed is the same as the original bed of the plus, it just looks higher but I assure you it is not. As for leveling, the the rods are fixed so you level in the x direction by adjusting the two z motors. I have had no problem with the y axis getting out of level. That height is always defined by the plane between the two rods. I think you would run into problems if the bed was too long and started to cause some bowing under its own weight but I didn't have that problem with the 18in trial. Now mind you I also only ran a few tests, by no means have I fully tested everything about it. Proof of concept only here.

Still it's pretty cool. I am about to extend my bed to 17.5" so good to know.
