Here's some quick pics of my plus V2. I have done a few mods and I'm very happy so far. Next step is dual bowden and eventually triple bowden setup. I'm adding one at a time. Happy building!

I'm not using the green tape any more, but it was all I could get the first day. It didn't really work well :/

I think this was one of the last version one juniors shipped as it was dispatched July 29th 2013

Any way here it is:

And while I'm at it I just want to say thanks to PrintrBot for a enjoyable entry into 3d printing

I had read the reviews, and spent a lot of time here reading - I knew what I was buying, an entry level hobbyist 3D printer
I was ready for the missing bits, or even bits not working and a 4 week wait for it to arrive.

Well all I can say is I had it (in Australia) in just over a week (amazing)
Went though the parts list checking every thing off, and guess what I had extras - lol
followed the guides and videos to assemble it with no drama

And thanks to all on this site did a pretty good first print

so yep I'm hooked and would recommend PrintrBot

Ian

Someone suggested I posted a printer picture in this thread.
Here it is, the Simple v2 (with some minor mods, as I built it using "cut your own" wood):

Here's a few pics of my printrbot Plus with dual extruders and my simple XL. As you can see there has been a lot of changes to the plus since my first post on here. The plus has an extended 16 inch z axis and hopefully I will be able to widen the x axis as well. Triple extruders are on my reader at the same time as widen the base. I'm currently adding gt2 belts and aluminum pullys

My Printrbot Simple is made out of milky Lucite. I use an antique sewing bobbin as my PLA holder. Also, I use a foam base with a cut mirror to support the printer and reduce vibration.

My simple is in a continious state of being torn apart and being rebuilt, 90% of the enjoyment of owning it is to see how far I can push it.

Recently my printrboard went bang, and the stepper driver chips got fried, so I took the opportunity to swap it out for a RAMPS card which is the ultimate in hackability. I have added a heated bed and a glass build plate, which has transformed my use of evrn PLA, and opened up ABS as a possible material to use. With a heated, bed, and glass plate, I dont have to worry aboug my first layer anymore, even straight onto the glass it works perfectly. Printing has become boringly predictable.

The little black box on the side of the extruder, is a servo with a microswitch on the arm, just getting it all wired up to try out autobed leveling.

So I've been printing a lot lately and was thinking of how far my bot has come since I first put it together (fall 2012) so I thought I'd post some photos! Its an LC v1 with a ton of upgrades I've added over the years:

Cosmetic:
Ebony wood stain and red ABS accents

Functional:
Acme threaded rods
GT2 pulleys and belts
Machined aluminum bed
Y and Z axis stabilizers
X and Y belt tensioners
500 watt power supply
40mm fan and fan duct
Moved X-end stop to give more usable room
Printed filament spool holder

I didnt have any impressive parts printed (I tend to print things just to give them away, haha) but theres a black hole sculpture I've been designing and a blue chess piece on the print bed that took exceptionally well to the acetone vapor polishing.

My plus has changed a lot since my first post on here. I now consider it to be a plus v2/v2.2 hybrid as the carriage setup is from the v2.2 which is essentially a v2.1 with dual extruders hence the 2.2. The X and y axis's both have aluminum bearing blocks as well as the z axis smooth rods. I custom built a dual drag cable setup to manage all my upgraded wiring as employed strain reliefs throughout the system.

The y axis has been extended over 17 inches as well as the z axis. Im awaiting my 2nd heated mk2 bed so I can heat the majority of my print space. I will also be milling out a custom aluminum plate that will house both heated beds.

Wish I could fit dual extruders to my PB Jr v2.

You can fit them on the v2. The dual extruder kit through printrbot comes with a new carriage and x axis rod spacers. So it changed mine over to the one like the plus 2.1. So mines kind of a hybrid between the v2 and v2.1. I also extended all of the axis's to about 17 inches with the exception of the x axis. Im in the midst of building an all aluminum plus. Heres a pic of what I've put together so far.

Dont mind the rods in the pic as they are just for mock up. It will have about a 10-12 inch wide x axis when finished. Im using 40mm x 24mm aluminum square tubing for the frame and some commercial grade parts.

My modest Simple2014+Alum. Bed arrived mid-Feb, assembled, from Amazon. In the brief time since, I've done quite a bit on/to it:
  • As it arrived with a broken Y-axis tensioner, I immediately did Jon Lawrence's Simple GT2 Y-axis conversion (thing 194586) to get it up and running.
  • Within a week or so, I realized I need a spot for filament, etc. and ordered/installed the "XL/Tower Upgrade Bundle" with XL alum. bed.
  • In the name of parity, and for better accuracy, I put in Jon Lawrence's Simple GT2 X-axis conversion (thing 194686) as well. Easily most difficult upgrade I've done to date, due to the disassembly requirements to swap out the X-axis motor plate. Definitely worth the effort, though, I find belt drive _much_ more accurate/stable than stock.

The mods I have queued up at the moment (in no particular order), some of which will get done this weekend, are:
  • I purchased the XL (6"x4.5") heated bed kit (w/ relay, etc.) from MakerFarm, and already had picked up a thermistor from PB. As I've had curling issues since day one, I clearly need a heated bed, but am hesitant about wiring (hate soldering, etc. but can). I've got the ATX power cable from PB (Thanks guys!), so my plan is to swap out my power supply at the same time, and pull 12V for the heated bed from one or more of the unused leads off the ATX that aren't used by the ATX power cable.
  • I'm also mostly done printing/gathering the parts for Jon Lawrence's "300mm Y Axis-No Sag!" mod (thing 242185). Not really sure I need this, but I can see the sag, so might do this just on the premise "more stable = more accurate".
  • I picked up a nice, metal spider coupler off EBay which I need to get around to installing on my Z-axis motor shaft at some point.
  • I now have multiple inductive sensors which I intend to mount on the print head in order to enable "Simple bed auto-leveling". I'm tired of finessing the bed so much after reassembly and hope auto-leveling will make that slightly less finicky.
  • I need some bright LED lighting on the print bed, and also want a nice LCD display of what's going on. I've decided to either pull the trigger on adding the PB LCD kit, or wait for the next printer (a Metal Simple is in my near future). I'm a little worried I might be getting a bit carried away modding my poor Simple2014 at this point.

Some pix follow. The bed isn't currently bolted down (right now printer is offline) because I've been sizing and placing the heated bed element, so also included some shots of what's under the bed on mine. Please feel free to PM me with any questions, comments!

Thats what im doing. The plan is to build a rock solid setup that is made to handle anything you throw at it. Only top notch parts, I just got the frame tubing. Its aluminum as well and it's 25mm by 40mm. It will Essentially be somewhat printrbot plus style and part RepRap Squad style. Eventually I will probably sell it as I have too many printers but, I love taking designs to the next level.

Here's my Bot. It started as a string tension simple, then it became a 1405. Now its super cooled and super modified.

6 fans total. 1 for the extruder, 1 for the hot end, 1 rear fan, 2 part fans, and 1 extruder motor fan.

This uses a mash up of Jon's designs and my designs. Its super stable! I'm extremely surprised by how much better it prints with these mods.

My print area is 285 x 100 x 235

Also how did you fix it to the bed?

I fixed it with 3M 468MP 3/4" Tape. It is very easy to work with once you realize that when it goes down that is where it is going to stay.

PLA @ 55
ABS @ 90

I might be able to back the ABS off a little. Still playing with it. I need to get an Auto Leveling issue in RAMPS sorted out before I can really dial everything in. For some reason it is not using the generated plane when it actually prints. It probes fine and generates the coefficients. Not sure what is going on.

I was happy with my Printrbot, but not even happiness could stop me from doing more stuff to it.

My original idea was to add a 214mm square heated bed to it, but I didn't have easy access to the glass and didn't feel like cutting my 400mm rods, so I just made the latest bed I could out of 1/8" aluminum.

I'm waiting on a device to fix my Printrboard so I don't know the actual print volume yet. But my bed is about 16.5" by 10.5" and the height is 9-10", so I doubt I'll run out of space. Here's some pictures! Relatively simple mod, not much different from my older design. Just larger.

Funny thing, my 13" MacBook fits in the bed size, I went from not being able to print a phone case to being able to print a laptop case within 6 months of owning my printer. 3D printing is magical!

Here is my humble simple metal setup. I still think there is a way to go from an accuracy as big prints that aren't flat cause some issues. She has the heated bed upgrade and I am using maker geeks accessories for my power supply and spool feeder. Some of the usual fan upgrades for the hot end and the extruder motor. I'm on a hold right now on making other upgrades until I get to the bottom of a few print failures on long overnight prints.
