Peach Printer for $100 - but its not plastic extrusion

Postby RetireeJay » 2013-Oct-Wed-08-Oct

This printer - currently on Kickstarter (October 2013) uses a photopolymerized resin, and a laser beam to solidify the resin. The laser is directed by mirrors that are driven off the computer's sound card. The z axis is controlled by dripping water into a reservoir; the liquid resin floats on the water. Fascinating.

Just the idea of floating the resin on top of salt water is brilliant - so much cheaper to just need a thin layer of resin then a whole tank full...

Has raised $500,000 of their $50,000 goal! Can't wait to see what they do for a version 2 - may be really spectacular. Though by then some marketing genius will corrupt them and V2 will be $1200 not $100.

Keep in mind that for $100 you get the print head and 100ml of resin. You still need to supply the drip system and printer tank which puts this somewhere between a kit and a true DIY setup. I agree though, very fresh idea. I'm not sure the print quality compares well to other laser sintering systems but you can't argue with the price of the printer and the resins. If you check out the funding levels you will see that the pro version is already $1000 so if it truly takes off one would expect to see higher prices.

And don't forget estimated delivery is a year out, which for oversubscribed Kickstarter projects means at least two. Christmas 2015?

QU-BD (I know...) has said their new cheap $200 FDM printer will be $100 for those of us who wait for delivery each day until 3 (I've been ripping old CDs). It'll probably ship earlier than the Peach.

I would expect the Peach printer to need to be situated in a level place free of vibration at any frequency, to keep the water still and level, or else prints could literally come out wavy.

I just got an email from them about one of these for a 100 bucks,it's tempting but the wait is July 2015.They originally had a problem with holes in the prints.
