Thingystock 3 - Less Waste, Higher Precision!

Hello everyone!

After losing my Thingystock v2 files to the death of my hard drive, I have decided to design an updated version. The main points were slimming down the plastic components to save on printing time an plastic use, distance the new printer from belts, which removes more hysteresis from the printer creating even more accurate printing.

Anyway, those were the main goals of my new design. Well, I think I have achieved that. At least in the 3D model that is!

Here are the pictures of the current design. I took a few hours today to work on it and I am very happy with what I have so far.

I know it may not look like much, but this is about 70% done. You can see that the motors are now on the top, and will have a much shorter run to the RAMPS board. The only parts on the bottom will be the bed and power supply, the rest will be on the top of the unit. Bed mounting is the next thing to do! I'll keep updating the thread. I should start printing sometime in October!

Back to the bot, are you planning to use leadscrews for the vertical (whatever you call them) thingies? I'm partial to TR8-8 (aka T8-8) screws, although they have so little friction you'll need to leave the motors powered up all the time. I think you'll gain a lot in travel and maybe printing speeds.

Snowed-in season is coming soon to Mooselake, so maybe I'll actually find the time to get back to serious 3D printing and build a Thingystock.

Moose, that shop would have more floor space than my 4-bedroom house! You could build a Friendship Sloop in there!

As described in the RepRap reference for corexy, you need both motors to turn at the same rate to execute a line in X or a line in Y (different directions of one motor transforming the motion from X to Y). But in another way of looking at it, you could say that the natural X and Y axes diagonal. Then the X motion would be controlled by one motor and the Y motion by the other motor. Of course, now the bed dimensions are totally messed up (and you probably would want to make the center of the bed X=0, Y=0), but with a slicer that knows what to do and a firmware that can handle the bed shape, the operation would then be quite straightforward. And the calculations for bed shape limits are easier and faster than making the Marlin "planner" transform the coordinates from XY to diagonal (which it would have to do for corexy). Just a thought. (And by the way, corexy uses two belts, not one).

Semi related, this is the progress so far on the Thingybot delta 3D printer!

Laser cut aluminum mixed with printed parts. Not much to show, but if anyone wants to know anything about it feel free to ask!
