Hello from Traverse City, Mi. U.S.A.

Postby russellriker » 2015-Aug-Wed-12-Aug

Just wanted to say Hi. New to the forums, and 3D printing. Well kinda new. I'm a mentor on a FRC Team, and we use a bunch of different 3D printers for custom parts on the kids robots. So I got my intro to 3D there and from the first I knew I wanted one. So after months of research (and saving) I got myself a Printrbot Metal Simple with heated bed. Well it showed up last night. I'm in love. First couple of test prints where a big rocky. But I got things sorted out. Then did the fan shroud, and it came out amazing. Now to have my son teach me more CAM so I can start printing my designs.

thanks and happy printing

Welcome to the forum. Russ.

We're almost neighbors, sort off. Hang a left at the bridge and go 250 miles.

Is FRC what they used to call First Robotics? My oldest girl was in it, must be 12 or more years ago, and there's still an active team at her former high school. They share the same shop facilities as the school's adult open woodshop.

Mooselake,

Small world. Yes FRC is First Robotics Challenge part of the whole FIRST program. My son and I's team are FRC Team 1711 The Raptors at Traverse City Central High School. And what a year we just had. Won our district here in TC, went on to the State of Michigan championship. Won that!! Then on the to world competition in St. Louis and won our Carson sub-division and got into the world finals. Ended up placing 8th out of over 5000 teams. If you can't tell... Pretty proud of what the kids did.

Our local teams (Houghton and Dollar Bay) did pretty well, too.

The Houghton team wouldn't give up their robot, which I thought would have made a great trash can hauler for our 1000' driveway.

Kirk, thats awesome. I am constantly amazed at what these kids can come up with.

1000' driveway? Thats not a driveway. Thats a road. But I agree. Some of the other mentors and I on our team joke about why can't First come up with a challange that at the end you have a functioning robot that can do real world tasks, like mow the lawn. Or walk the dog. :-)

Most of us would be healthier if we got more exercise like walking the dog. Maybe for our good health, the robot should walk US! :D

Oh wait, that's what a WII Fit does (sorta). :)
