Malware/Virus in MAKE Magazine 3D issue ?!!

Malware/Virus in MAKE Magazine 3D issue ?!!

Postby Warren_3Deee » 2012-Dec-Mon-16-Dec

On page 18 of the Make Magazine's December 3D printer special issue there is a reference to "InMoov Robotic Arm".
(this refers to the PDF document you can purchase online)

On the page the URL link printed is "thingiverse.com/hairygael"

BUT, the actual embedded URL if you click will take you to "thingverse.com/hairygel"

and this triggers a virus/malware warning Trojan:JS/IFrameRef - Severe. :o :!: :!:

Unsure of actual actions taken since this is automatically removed by my virus software, but buyer BEWARE !!!

If you manually type the correct thingiverse URL as typed on the page, it does indeed take you to the correct page.
I checked all other links in the document and this appears to be the only one that has been tampered with.

Makes me wonder how/who at Make magazine changed this URL. Obviously someone with a deep internal knowledge of the document and its creation.

I've emailed MAKE magazine and gotten a response back of "thanks.. we'll look into" but have not heard anything else since.

My guess is that it's actually a typo - one easy to understand how it happened.

Well Plexus, maybe you are right and I need to find my blanket :)

However, I wasn't dreaming when I first accessed thingverse.com and got directed to a existing website and got a virus warning (you can see in the background the website has ads and looks like a parked domain):

The thingverse.com domain was registered to a Nigerian IP, but was recently deleted as you can see from a historical DNS search; so I suspect this was originally set-up to catch people accidentally typing "thingverse" when they meant "thingiverse" and would get ad revenue from those people (and later on, infect them with malware).

So, possibly the 3D magazine issue was a typo, but the result wasn't benign.

The website IP has had its DNS entry removed and now does not take you anywhere.
