Printrbot Simple and new Microsoft .3mf file format?

Postby jeromedayton » 2014-Apr-Sat-15-Apr

Drumm Brooks announced that the new Printrbot Metal Simple would be using the new Microsoft .3mf format for plug and play capabilities:

http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/extremewindows/archive/2014/04/02/update-on-3d-printing-in-windows.aspx

Just what does this mean for gcode? Will g-code still be what's sent to the printrboard firmware or is a new firmware required? If g-code is still used, who is responsible for tuning the .3mf into g-code? Printrbot supplied drivers?

While I understand Brooks desire for the simplicity of plug and play, I hope it doesn't come at the cost of losing g-code as this seems to be a huge steps backwards.

I think the driver converts (slices) and outputs gcode, the 3mf format is just a model format, its
not sent to the printer. In the same way that photoshop files are not sent to a 2d printer, but converted
to the formats the printer supports.

Windows 8.1 already has a generic driver for rerap style machines.

I wonder if Windows 8.1 will be required to work with the plug and play drivers. Obviously not the .3mf format files, but the drivers to work with it. That's an interesting move, I hope it works out well - I'm excited to see what it means for Printrbot
