Postby wthierry » 2013-Aug-Thu-22-Aug

someone gave me a bunch of 3mm pla, so I bought a ubis 3mm .4 diameter hotend, to replace my ubis 1.75 when I want to use the larger filiment... is there a difference in print quality if both hot ends have a .4mm diameter hole in the end???? Im confused!

As far as I know, your print quality will be the same. The entrance and bore of the ubis are either 1.75mm or 3mm, but the nozzle is the same. I think the entrance and bore are 1.75mm now to make sure the 1.75mm filament doesn't flex side to side as it's pushed through the extruder.

Hmm - so if I have a 3 mm. hotend, does this mean I can also run 1.75 mm. filament through it?

Well, yes, I've done it. But you are likely to have problems with jamming. Also, the pool of molten plastic at the bottom will continue to flow out the nozzle even if you have retraction turned on because there's less area on the 1.75mm filament to "pull" back on the pool with surface tension.

Printrbot Plus operational January 2013
Brass threaded rods (5/16" X 18) & nuts for Z axis
GT2 belts & pulleys
Cable chain to reduce probability of fatigue failure in wires
E3D V5 Hot End, 0.4mm nozzle, also 0.8 and 0.25 in use occasionally
PB fan mount + 40mm fan -- using printed mount adapter, not the E3D supplied fan
Injection molded extruder gears
Optical Z "endstop" (custom designed and built)
Have used many pounds of T-Glase filament. Now also doing some work with Ninjaflex SemiFlex

I'd be curious as well to see if the molten plastic didn't try and well up around the entrance, contributing to jams.

The 3 mm filament serves (to some degree,) as a piston on top of the molten pool. I can imagine 1.75 mm filament not serving that function as well.

Hmm - sounds like I better not chance it. It's a shame too because there's a good deal on some 1.75 mm. glow in the dark ABS on Ebay. Being as Halloween is coming right up...

You could use a short length of Teflon tubing inserted into the drive gear end of the hot end. Not sure of the exact size, but 4mm OD, 2mm ID sounds about right. It should be a snug fit into the UBIS, and you'd need to experiment with how far to push it in. Measure twice, order once...

I've got a kg of 1.75mm glow in the dark filament, waiting for my many months overdue QU-BD RPM. After the also delayed knee tuneup happens I should try this - if you go first I'd know what size tubing to get rather than my usual order a range of sizes technique. :-)

Well the guy on Ebay never bothered answering my question to confirm if his filament was really 1.75 mm. or not. In the meantime I found some glow in the dark, advertised as 3 mm. on Amazon for only three bucks more, and it's blue (!) so I ordered that. I don't even know where to get Teflon tubing.

Good luck with your knee tuneup.

Hmm - I just noticed that on Printrbot's web site, they give the specs for the Printrbot+ (here: http://printrbot.com/support/printrbot-plus/) as "Hot End: Ubis 1.75mm, 3mm". But it's not clear itf they mean you can get a hot end with one of two different sizes or if the one hot end can use both sizes.

From their order page "3mm filament will not work unless you purchase and install a 3mm hot end."

Perhaps it was an option in the past and they never updated the spec page.
