Wax filament

Postby PxT » 2015-Jun-Mon-15-Jun

I got a sample of wax filament to test out and I'm trying to decide which object(s) would make a good test for this material. Any great suggestions? Anyone else used this filament yet?

Is it Kai Parthy's MOLDLAY?

Do you intend to create lost wax molds for casting?

It's not MOLDLAY. MOLDLAY is described as "plastic filament with wax-like properties", what I got is just described as "wax" without much more elaboration, so it's a bit different. I don't have any experience with lost-wax molds but I'm open to ideas if they're not too elaborate. Really I'm just trying to figure out what would be a good test for this material and if it has any practical uses. Maybe I'll just stick with my standard test print.

I like the LED candle idea though, very meta. :)

I wonder if it's possible to turn ear wax in to filament.

Hmm, sounds like a Kickstarter opportunity to me! ;-)

How about a real candle, thread the wick in after printing, maybe doubled with a string or wire to pull it through.

When I was a goldsmith we would mix wax and plastics on occasion. It was usually to get a texture/pattern from something (mesh) or to act as filler. Either way, a kiln will burn it out just the same.

Had a bit of trouble getting good bed adhesion. Finally got going with a coat of 3M Automotive Trim adhesive, which was the stickiest spray I had on hand. The filament kinked and got jammed during that print but at least it stuck to the bed while it lasted. Will have another crack at it - making progress.
