Esun Extruder Cleaner Filament

Postby JonS » 2015-Feb-Sun-21-Feb

I thought I'd try some extruder cleaner filament after reading some positive reviews.

After trying to print some Laywoo-D3 with a 0.4mm nozzle (not a great idea) last night I needed to flush out my hot end, so I grabbed my cleaner filament and gave it a try.

I fed it in and advanced and retracted the filament several times until it came out nice and white. I'm now printing with clear PLA perfectly. There's not really much else to say.

I boought it from here (I have no affiliation with Toy Builder Labs, I found them via Google): http://www.toybuilderlabs.com/collections/specialty-filament/products/extruder-cleaning-filament?mc_cid=0fed57f94b&mc_eid=3921790584

I have been thinking of getting some of this, my local dealer is an esun agent, and i pretty much only use eSun filament now, i will have to see if they carry stock or can order in.

I'd never heard of eSun before reading about this cleaner filament. It sounds like they're pretty innovative.

I switched to thier filament about 6 months ago, its slighly more expensive than the noname chinese stuff i had been getting before (about 15%), but its consistent on temp and diameter. i have a business setup now running ondemand prints and i need that consistency. I have had to bin at least 3 reels of the cheap filament.

Lulzbot just signed a deal with eSun for filaments, including the cleaner filament.

http://3dprintingindustry.com/2015/02/1 ... d-printer/

I'm still a little skeptical about cleaning filament. How much different is it than something like natural PLA?

It hard to do a scientific experiment, but the cleaner filament is quite rough. I believe it's porous (borne out by how light it is).

It's certainly quite different from natural PLA, but the question is, is it more effective at picking up particles and flushing them from the hot end? I think only time, and a large collection of empirical evidence will tell.

I bought a sample pack on Amazon. Will try it out on my printers and see how well it cleans.

Anecdotal evidence from trusted sources on this forum is fine with me. :) It actually sounds interesting and very useful if it works as advertised.

[update]
I found a review on the ultimaker forums:
http://umforum.ultimaker.com/index.php? ... -filament/

More feedback here:
http://3dprintboard.com/showthread.php? ... -From-Esun

and an article here
http://3dprint.com/6042/esun-cleaning-filament/

(Sorry for the frequent posts, an snow/ice/sleet storm is starting so I'm stuck in my house with plenty of time to run my printer and research 3D printing topics while things are printing. :)

Not many places online seem to sell eSun filament (at least not that shows up in quick Google search). However, this place did come up http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__1532__1530__3D_Printers-PLA.html and they're selling what they claim to be eSun filament for $18.24 to $21.44 per kg (their prices are for 0.5kg spools).

That's some of the lowest cost filament I've seen. Nearly as low as Foxsmart (which is $18/kg)!

They wouldn't let me check shipping without creating an account and logging in. Have you ordered from them, and how reasonable were the shipping charges?

I got my eSun filament cleaner. Ran it through 2 of my printers. They both came out clean so I guess I don't have any debris to be flushed out. I'll try them again this weekend. Maybe do a cold pull or two.

I only found that retailer late last night and haven't ordered from them, so no idea on the shipping charges.

I've ordered RC motors and controllers from them, and don't remember the shipping as being high. They don't weigh anywhere near what one spool of filament does, and China Post won't do packages over 2kg and pushes you into higher cost services iirc.

Hmmm, thier packaging is quite different to the packaging i get my eSun filament in, if the pictures are anything to go by.

So it turns out a eSun distributor is located the next city over from where I live and sent me some cleaner filament samples (along with wood, bronze and a few others). I haven't had the need to test it out yet, but I do agree that the texture is rougher and the filament seems different than just natural looking PLA.

I just scored a roll of the cleaner, which suprised me as it is shown as being sold in cut lengths in all the articles i have seen.

Expensive, $28 for 0.1kg

I bought this cleaning filament and it does not work on my Printrbot Simple Metal, it tends to wrap around the engrennage of the extruder and if I loosen the screw too much this patina, even increasing temperature.
It is very "soft".
It would go up something like I've seen on Thingiverse:
Printrbot NinjaFlex Pilot Upgrade http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:730243
or
Anti-Jam Guide for Printrbot Alum Extruder http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:488531

If you're going to feed it via the extruder (rather than manually), you have to move using small steps and pausing. When I've done this, I've fed forward a few mm with manual 1mm clicks, and then back a couple.

When I tried feeding in 10mm steps at normal extrusion speeds, it failed.

Feed very slowly is the answer.

It's been a few months, how has the cleaning filament worked out? Have you found an optimal temp/feed rate/duration that works best?

I just got a slight clog & found the eSun cleaner on Amazon.

I figure for $10 bucks I'll give it a try; anything to avoid tearing apart the hotend.

I use it at the printing temperature of the filament I'm cleaning out (typ. 195°C for PLA for me).

I feed it either manually with my fingers, or by manually clicking on 2 x 1mm extrude feeds, followed by 1mm retract. I do that until I get bored.
