Advances in 3D filament manufacture - geek alert!

Postby RetireeJay » 2016-May-Tue-17-May

It happens (don't ask why) that I have a subscription to "Plastics Engineering" magazine. The magazine is really for people who work big-time in the plastics industry and it can get pretty geeky at times - but overall it's surprisingly readable.

Anywho, there are a couple of articles in the recent issue of particular interest to the 3D printing community. The first one talks about new equipment that can produce 3D filament with extraordinarily tight control over filament diameter and filament ovality, and also addresses bubble inclusions in the filament.

The next article discusses formulation of PLA with certain fillers that help it to bond well to the print bed and to reduce shrinkage problems. I think the author actually uses a consumer 3D printer with PLA in a non-professional, non-industrial environment because he talks about using blue painter's tape, for example. On the other hand, I am sure that the author actually works in the plastics industry.

Thank you Jay! I got a lot out of reading those.

Now where can I buy filament with 13µm tolerance?
