Staples announces in-store 3D printing

Staples announces in-store 3D printing

Postby holmes4 » 2012-Nov-Thu-17-Nov

A new service called “Staples Easy 3D” will allow customers to upload their designs to Staples’ website, then pick up the printed objects at their local office supply megastore, or have them shipped to their home or business — not unlike the photo- and document-printing service the company already offers.

The project was announced today at Euromold 2012 by 3-D printer manufacturer Mcor Technologies, who is partnering with Staples to provide its new Iris printers for the service.

The Iris printers employ an innovative method to generate objects, using reams of paper that are cut and printed while being stacked and glued together. This technique allows for a high-resolution layer thickness of 100 microns, similar to that of the MakerBot Replicator 2, but not quite as fine as the 25-micron capability of the Form 1.

Interesting print method using paper, I had not heard of this before. Seems kind of wasteful for small objects though, you end up throwing away or recycling a lot of material. Here is a video:

Another article on Mcor and staples on 3ders.org.

There's also mention of Brook's buy one, give one away to your school kickstarter project.

Of all the 3D print methods available, this one seems a weird choice for a large chain store doesn't it?

Maybe I'm missing something, but how do you clean up your prints? Dremel/sand the paper object?

Also, having to "birth" the object from its paper cocoon seems like it would restrict the complexity of the objects you print, especially any complex inner voids.

It seems to me that this paper method is an alternative to the plaster Z-Corp style for making design models, not anything that is functional.

I can see how it makes sense for an existing paper printer to use paper for 3D. Although I wonder about the structural capacity of paper vs plastic.

Started with a Printrbot LC Kit; now it's a monster as big as a mid size fridge!
Single ATX Power supply, 650 watts, relay controlled heat bed
extra Z height (3+ ft) via longer rods, but I don't use it. Yet. To reduce wobble, I'm using thing:46082 under the Printrbot.
Dual heated beds, 1 currently working; space for a 3rd
Purple gluestick on glass seems to be sticky enough to get adhesion

This was supposed to be a tool, not a series of projects... grrrrr......
