Happy Spam Day!

Happy Spam Day!

Postby Mooselake » 2017-May-Sun-11-May

So I'm a little late, but on May 1, 1978 the first email spam ever was sent on Arpanet, advertising the DEC PDP-20. Bonus points if you know what it's word size was without looking it up. It should be obvious to all you 1108ers out there. Extra bonus points if you have one in your basement.

Gosh, I just deleted/banned another babble spammer. Doubt if they teach spam history to the rent-a-spammers though.

I'm going to guess it's word size was 36 bits.

Back in the old pre-web days I used to use rec.music.synthesizers.forsale to buy and sell music studio gear to keep my music studio equiped and interesting. I got a bit of a postive reputation for my forsale posts. I wasn't doing it as a business nor was I running my studio as a business - its a serious hobby. but one person posted to those on the net at the time, that I should be banned from the internet because of my many forsale posts - afterall, the internet was not for commercial purposes. The complaint didn't go anywhere but it was notable taking into account how the internet devolved into the wasteland it is today.

I worked for (actually, built it's network) back in the early 94/95 dial up days. I was the security/complaint/support/coffee maker department. It was a wasteland even then, although it was harder to find. I'd have people call me up and order that I personally remove all the porn while acting like it was all my fault.

At least email spam wasn't much of a thing for a couple years.

Yep, 36 bit words. Don't know if it was one (like the 1100) or two's complement arithmetic though. Pity that this core i5 quad core desktop is way faster, more ram/disk/etc., than NASA's 1110 was, but it gets a whole lot less done. Kerbal is the closest it gets to rocket science
