First successful print on PB+: soft top

Postby brianlow » 2013-Jul-Sat-18-Jul

First print. 0.3m layer height. 210*C extruder. 70*C bed.

The top stayed gummy and got dragged around by the extruder.

Used a small 5cm fan during the print (held manually).

Any suggestions?

Nice job, looks like a great start!

If that's PLA (and it looks like it is) then you can probably print at a much lower temperature, which will definitely help. Most of the PLA I have seems happy with about 185-195 degrees C, although of course that's just what the thermistor reports to the board so it could be significantly different from that.

You can also play with the option to not allow any layer speeds to be lower than 10 or 15 seconds, but for a final layer that small I don't think that'll help much: your nozzle will still be sufficiently close to the material as to keep it from cooling very effectively, although the fan will of course help.

The other thing you can try is using a prime pillar (in KISSlicer) or just printing multiples. Either option will give the nozzle something else to do while the part cools between layers.

Thanks. How can I distinguish PLA from ABS? I figured it was ABS based on.

The easiest way for me to tell is to burn a little bit of it and see how it smells. PLA smells like burnt sugar whereas ABS has a pretty nasty burning plastic smell. If it is ABS then I'd expect it to require a higher extrusion temperature - something like 225-235 degrees C on my setup.

I think it is PLA. It burned without a noticable smell. Printed at 195*C just fine. Also calibrated the extruder steps. Thanks for the help.
