If you want to talk about the print competition that we just posted, please use this thread. Discuss strategies, ask questions, etc. I'll try to answer any questions about the rules, etc.

Im working on a new design of a printer, which is more than 90% printed, would that qualify?. I could submit a photo of my current working model.

The other parts added are screws, some steel tube, and motors etc. But it is mostly printed, far more so than a reprap. The main chassis is pribted so its not just a collection of rods joined together with bits of plastic. I designed it to be made out of simple parts that can be purchased here in the philippines, without having import items from abroad (5 week wait, 30% customs tax). Currently only the hotend and the electronics board have to be imported, but im looking to change even that. I would love to submit it to the competition. I intend to offer the design to local schools and colleges as an open source design, so they can create thier own.

I would love to submit it to the competition, as i have been slaving away on the design for months.

A little over 10 days left to enter this and so far only two entries. This is going to be an easy win for someone! Who else has something cool they want to show off? Let's see it!

I will be adding mine to the mix as soon as I get finished. I think that there will be a lot of more last minute entries as well.

Im yet to see if they work out, the original idea was based around solid rods, im using tubing which may have minor variations in the surface. If it does not work out 100% like this, im going to try with floating axles for the bearings, with a strong spring pushing the axle inwards. That will also help with threading the shaft in the first place, at the moment i have to lituraly construct the trio of bearings around the shaft, because the tolerances are so tight i cant push it in afterwards. It will also help compensate for any wear.

However the action is fine, and pretty smooth. Its suprisingly difficult to move the carriage verticaly without rotating the tube.

I've always thought threadless ballscrews were pretty neat but I personally haven't seen much in the way of practicality. It would be great if someone came up with a design that functioned exactly like the theoretical version.
Have you seen the design on thingiverse that is very similar in basic layout, I think it's called the smartrap or something like that.

Don't forget that gravity is a good thing to avoid any backlash in a vertical mounted leadscrew. I've never experienced any problem in the z axis. I am using an 8mm leascrew in my pb+. For some reason here is much cheaper and easier to get a threaded rod than a smmoth one. In fact. All the smooth rods in my printer were sourced from old nonworking 2d printers.

I'm sorry for the delay guys...I had grand plans for the entry, but alas - the cries of a 2 month old and a stern look from the wife were a gentle reminder of my "other duties".

Anyway - I posted my entry - it's a micro fpv quadcopter based on the designs of some of the best rigs available today (read - copied and shrunkified) no but seriously, it's not like a took a scan and scaled it down - every single piece was designed in sketchup by my own hand along with the cheapest pair of calipers I could find. To be honest though - the quadcopter is the last thing I am proud of in this whole journey. The printrbot jr was the real star of the show - along with throwing caution (and print quality) to the wind and making a 4x5 printer print like a 10x10 :D.

So yeah, there's a real demand for these style quadcopters in the fpv community due simply to the size and no compromise video quality. It comes with vibration dampers, removable plates, and enough space to carry telemetry equipment in addition to the base electronics.

When you think of worlds colliding and all the skills you would have to bring to bear to make something like this a reality...it stretches the imagination...

it's been a great ride and looking forward to more fun :)

Happy new year all!!!

Have seen the smartrap, i borrowed a few ideas from it, my design is as i say an early slpha, it has a lot of iterations to go through yet, which is why i want to opensource it as soon as it makes sense, im currently reworking the whole z-riser, y carriage block as the one i have is far too big, heavy and eats into the travel on both z and y.

I have also come up with a very very cheap bed support system that will allow me to use a 1.3 mm aluminium plate without bending, and make it much lighter than the acrylic numberplate covers it currently uses. 1.3mm ally is generaly available at any sign makers shop.

The smartrap is very very cool, and looking at the designs early iterations, they show fhe same "klunkyness" that my design currenty shows, so im encouraged that it can be polished considerably. But here in PH the smartrap sufferes from the imported parts problem. Smooth and threaded rods are just not available. Or lmu88 bearings.

I also have to get a lot more proficent at OPENScad, my models tend to be very "boxy", plus working with a SImple as my production printer, even with the volume upgrade, every part is constrained to 100mm on at least one dimension.

If you're not able to get it to work then make a "placeholder" post that just contains any text you like then PM me the full content and I will edit your post to include it. You can put images on imgur.com temporarily or something if needed.

hi. its not an issue, its a feature. yes its a pain, but we have had to impose antispam countermeasures as the forum was getting too spammed and causing the mods too much work to deal with it.

you have to post a handful or so of posts before you can post links. however you can upload photos using the file uploaded at the bottom of the message screen. go ahead and use that.

Nice guitar holder, rick! I have a small music studio so I appreciate this. and also because I want to make a hanger for 4 canoe paddles and this might work for them if I could scale it down. care to share the model? no problem if you don't.

Welcome to the forums Rick.
And thanks for posting.

If you're having trouble posting the code consider attaching it as a .txt or a .zip file. If it still doesn't let you do that you might need to accumulate a few more posts before our anti-spam system will allow it.
