notification emails dont link to thread only subforum

Postby allanonmage » 2013-Mar-Thu-16-Mar

Mobile here, pardon the misspellings.

Ive noticed the notification emails contain links to the sub forum referenced but not the actual thread. Will someone please change it such that the link takes me to the proper thread?

Started with a Printrbot LC Kit; now it's a monster as big as a mid size fridge!
Single ATX Power supply, 650 watts, relay controlled heat bed
extra Z height (3+ ft) via longer rods, but I don't use it. Yet. To reduce wobble, I'm using thing:46082 under the Printrbot.
Dual heated beds, 1 currently working; space for a 3rd
Purple gluestick on glass seems to be sticky enough to get adhesion
FB album with pics: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... ec287e8726

This was supposed to be a tool, not a series of projects... grrrrr......

There does not appear to be a way to do this. however you are more than welcome do some research and post your findings here. the mod that is allowing this is Prime Notify.

It's phpBB, not sure which version. However, I use phpBB on a private forum and it always includes the thread link in the notification of a new topic or reply to a subscribed thread.

are you using Prime Notify? if not what are you using for post/thread notifications?

Right. phpbb has built in subscription notification but it does not include the actual text of the message in the notify email. i am pretty sure it also only links to the thread. here we use a mod that also includes the message of the thread in the email notification. it uses all the other standard notification info which unfortunately is just the link to the thread, not the new post.

one thing I do is set the forum to list the posts in descending chronological order so that the newest post is at the top to avoid having to scroll.

I read the OP's complaint that the notification provided a link to the forum but not to the specific thread (or post). I didn't see it asking for the text of the post. Perhaps I misinterpreted. My forum sends a link to the specific post or thread that is new, and includes the subject, but not the contents.

What Prime Notify does is just add in the text of the PM or the post as well. so whatever else is in the email is what phpBB normally includes. I don't have much control over that without getting into custom coding phpBB.

holmes can you verify that the notification email on your forum also includes the full link to either take you right into the thread or right to the post? here, the link is just to the forum that the thread/post originated from. I don't think Prime Notify messes with the link itself and there are no options i can see in the admin tools to change this. so if your forum includes the thread and/or post as well then it means something different is happening here and I will investigate further (although I dont think there is anything I can do about it).

The email I get contains a link to either the thread (if a new thread) or the individual post if a reply. Here is an example:

Hello Steve,

You are receiving this notification because you are watching the topic, "<topic name>" at "<forum name>". This topic has received
a reply since your last visit. You can use the following link to view the
replies made, no more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic.

If you want to view the newest post made since your last visit, click the
following link:

If you want to view the topic, click the following link:
httpsx://.../viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1049

If you want to view the forum, click the following link:

If you no longer wish to watch this topic you can either click the
"Unsubscribe topic" link found at the bottom of the topic above, or by
clicking the following link:

Including the full text of the new post in the email notification to the thread is a great feature and I like it very much.

However, my complaint is that the link provided in the email goes to the forum containing the thread, not the thread itself. That means if I remember the name of the thread, I can find it again. Or if I catch the email when it's fresh, I can click on the link and go to the forum and recognize the newly updated thread. That works OK on a slower forum like this one. However, that will not scale later on down the road, and is generally really annoying, especially on a mobile device and connection.

I've uploaded a pic showing what I see in gmail. You can see that it links to the forum and not the thread.
I've uploaded a pic showing the page I get to when I clicked on the link. Note that it's the forum with a bunch of threads to choose from.

For comparison, I've attached sample pics from another forum that sends you a clickable link to go directly to the thread. in this case it also takes you directly to the new post, which is fine, but not the main issue I am bringing to the table. Yes, I realize it uses a different forum technology, that doesn't have any bearing here. I think some options just aren't set "standard-ly".

Sorry for the LIFO ordering, look at the pics from the bottom up to follow this post.

If you tell me the name and version of the product that you are using, I can research how to do this.

Hey guys, I see this has not changed. What's the hold up? If you want to look it up and fix it that's fine, but I can't do research to offer a suggestion unless I know versions.
