Flux Capacitor & Hoverboard

This Halloween our twins dressed up as Doc Brown & Marty McFly, and so I thought I’d try to augment their costumes with some homemade props. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out & wouldn't have been able to pull off something like this without a 3D printer, or three.

Time constraints kept me from completely geeking out the hoverboard, I might go back and add more parts to the bottom--although I was able to make housings for the touch lights

Here’s a break down on the Flux Capacitor construction:

I started with a basic electrical box, which I then butchered with a Dremel to get an opening for a large window frame I printed out of PETG using a 1mm nozzle:









I superglued an acrylic sheet to the frame, added a red Dymo sticker:



The case just needed two PVC elbows & some silver spray paint:



Here are the “relays” before I painted them with metallic gold spray paint:




I balked at spending $38 for spark plug covers/wires




So I decided to make my own:



After some red paint & yellow tape they looked pretty close to the real thing.

I used three strings, each wired to an Arduino. Using a basic, and I mean basic program I was able to get the lights to flash in sequence:

My wife & I are going to try & convince our twins to dress up as Gilligan & the Skipper next year. If they agree, I’ll have to whip up a coconut radio…
