How do you remove ABS support material

Postby hqmhqm » 2012-Jul-Wed-11-Jul

I am using Slic3r 0.8.4 , and using it's feature to add support material for overhangs.

Even though the support material is a single 0.5mm thickness, it's still tough to remove, the ABS plastic is so strong.

Does anyone have any tips for easily removing support material, or config params for Slic3r that make it easier to remove?

A Sledgehammer......OK maybe not. About all you can do is use cutters, a file or a Dremal tool.

I use a scalpel (be very careful with this method though), also for cruder removal I will often start with needle nose pliers (grip the support and twist slowly and gently), these methods combined have proved very successful, so far

then for final smoothing and clean up I use a small set of diamond files.

On parts that have long straight supports that can be accessed I've used a really sharp chisel. I place it flush along the edge of the support and tap it lightly with a mallet. I can get a pretty clean cut with little cleanup.

A box or pack of single edged razor blades can perform stand-in duties as *really sharp chisels* and work well for other scraping and cutting 3DP needs as well.

Small snips or those toenail scissors from a drug store.
