What kind of Paint to use on a model

Postby spitfirehauser » 2014-Mar-Thu-15-Mar

I have just completed the below print of Olaf from Frozen. i need to paint some Black on the buttons, eyes, ect and some orage on his carrot nose. Can anyone tell me a good paint to use on my prints? My original plan was to use s sharpie for the black but in trying it on some test prints the black seems to run along the X axis lines. I did find a thread about using high build primer and wet sanding, but that seems like a long process for a desktop simple piece. thanks for what ever help you can give.

Acrylic hobby paint works well on PLA, I'm not sure about ABS.

I use acrylic paint as well for pla. Depending on the paint you might be able to clear coat over the paint in order to make it more durable. You could always try a test piece first.

Before painting, try spraying with a heavy "primer filler" you can get at auto repair places. Spray, wait an hour, lightly sand, then paint. You'll have a lot less noticeable ridges from printing that way.

Fingernail polish works well on ABS. Ask a Goth friend if you can borrow some of their black. They will be amused.

What kind of Paint to use on a model

Postby Maves230 » 2014-Mar-Sat-01-Mar

I use acrylic with a few coats of primer. It's easy to have holes and cracks where the paint won't stick and just gets absorbed into the print. Typically I use candle wax or that green hobby putty to seal it post primer, when they appear.
