Finally upgrading from JR Version 1: Where do I go now?

Postby hugerobots » 2017-Mar-Mon-00-Mar

Well, it's been years since I've modded my original JR to be a monstrous 1.5'x1x1' beast. Sadly, it's my extruder fan that broke the camel's back.

Where do I go from here to upgrade to something that will take the classic setup of 1 y, 1 x and 2 z motors?

Here are a few choices to peruse:

Printrbot Plus (https://printrbot.com/shop/assembled-me ... rbot-plus/)
Prusa I3 Mk2S (http://www.prusa3d.com/)
Lulzbot Taz 6 (https://www.lulzbot.com/store/printers/lulzbot-taz-6)

They all have positives and negatives. I'd probably get the Prusa at the moment.

Perhaps you could replace the hot end with an E3D v something or their volcano, add a new cooling fan (blower fans are now popular) and enjoy it for a few more years. It's hard to find a new printer in that size that isn't also big bucks.

You could build a new printer from one of the aluminum extrusions. Look at openbuilds v-slot

EDIT: Not true. Note that the Prusa prints from an SD card whereas the Printrbot prints from a file being sent over USB from a host (desktop or laptop or Raspberry Pi).

Personally, I like the convenience of generating G-code, looking at it on my Repetier screen to see if it's proposing to do what I want, and then printing directly from Repetier. Changing models is as easy as telling Repetier to open a different file, instead of pulling a physical card out of the printer, inserting it in the computer, futzing with the file structure on the card, and then putting the card back in the printer. How many times can you swap that card in and out before the mechanical connection becomes weak?

Also, having the User Interface on the computer is really handy. For example, I had a complicated print where I inserted a "@pause" command in the G-code. Repetier ran the print up to the pause, then let me make some adjustments to what was going on, then resume the print. Would you be able to do that while printing from an SD card? I'm not talking about pausing "when" you think it's the right time based on watching the print; I mean pausing at EXACTLY a particular point in the print.

That print-from-card feature alone is a total deal-killer for me, regardless of how nice everything else may be.

Hey thanks for quick replies!

A few more details. My go-to application is Octoprint for network wifi printing and I definitely use Repetier for build plate organizing :) Also just recently picked up a J Head for its fan and concentrated heater block.

Everything is almost working except for the blown fan mosfet (afaik). I'd like to get a hole new built bot, but before that move maybe a new printeboard or the like would work?

The Prusa looks good but I've read a lot about how it isn't as versatile or reliable as a printrboard. Thoughts?

Jay, I think you are mistaken about the SD-only printing statement for the Prusa. It uses RAMBO electronics, and should fully support printing from Repetier Host, Pronterface, or anything else that uses the USB interface.

We have a Lulzbot Taz at work, which also uses a RAMBO. It's just as versatile as the Printrboard, and has been reliable. I've had to replace one Printrboard on my home machine, but haven't had to replace a RAMBO yet (knock on wood!).

You may be right. I've never seen a Prusa in person. But when I went to their web site and opened the user manual, I did not see anything about the USB interface; they only referred to using the SD card.

They talk about printing over USB (with Pronterface) starting on page 30 of the latest manual
http://www.prusa3d.com/downloads/manual ... k2s_en.pdf

RAMBO boards work just as you expect over USB. I have one in my Rostock.
