Printrbot Plus 2.1. E3D v6 or UBIS 13?

Postby orangefurball » 2016-Oct-Wed-14-Oct

Hey all!

I need some advice!

A buddy of mine is selling his Printrbot Plus 2.1, his wife didn't like it and he is fed up with the UBIS jamming. Offered to help but he just wants to get rid of it. He is only willing to take $100 for it.

Anyway, he's only used it for about 4 hours total print time. But from my old wood Simple days I know how much I hate the old UBIS.

I have two options, and I'm looking for the simplest one. I have a Printrbot Play that doesn't see much use that has a UBIS 13 on it. I also have an E3D v6 that I can throw on it.

What would be easiest to throw on there? The UBIS doesn't have a fan shroud on it due to the Play having it mounted on the extruder cover, but I can print up a fan mount.

Thanks!
Matt

The reason I don't have an E3D V6 on my Plus is that the extruder is only 62.3mm long (http://wiki.e3d-online.com/images/1/15/V6-175-ASSM.pdf). I installed an E3D V5 on my Plus, and I had to make several adjustments to account for the shorter length compared to the Ubis; the E3D V5 is about 70mm long.
I think the Ubis is 74mm long.

Printrbot Plus operational January 2013
Brass threaded rods (5/16" X 18) & nuts for Z axis
GT2 belts & pulleys
Cable chain to reduce probability of fatigue failure in wires
E3D V5 Hot End, 0.4mm nozzle, also 0.8 and 0.25 in use occasionally
PB fan mount + 40mm fan -- using printed mount adapter, not the E3D supplied fan
Injection molded extruder gears
Optical Z "endstop" (custom designed and built)
Have used many pounds of T-Glase filament. Now also doing some work with Ninjaflex SemiFlex
Print on glass with Scotch Craft Stick or other glue stick

Thanks Jay, that's what I was worried about. Is the UBIS 13 74mm as well? Maybe I could just retrofit one of the v6 adapters for the simple metal? I think the 2.1 has an aluminum extruder.

That's what I found when I googled it... but Printrbot's site was down and what I found was a stock Google image that may not be the -13. Maybe your luck with Google or Printrbot's site will be better.

Got the printer today. Plugged it in, calibrated, cleaned the hot end and it works fine. He won't take it back though, so I guess I'll just stick with the UBIS on my newest Printer family addition.

Just thought I would update everyone on where my Plus 2.1 currently stands. It was working fine with the ceramic Ubis, until one day I tried printing a large batch of TPU feet for the Thingybot. They went down surprisingly fine for the first few layers, so I left it for around 4 hours (was a 6 hour print). Came back and the Ubis was a mess! Not sure what happened, but the filament was everywhere. The TPU stuck to it like glue and I decided that that was a good time to replace the extruder and hot end with something TPU friendly.

After a few minutes in CAD I whipped up this

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1886650

Really simple design and it's working well so far. It could probably work with the older Aluminum extruder or the newer geared extruder, but I had some good results with the Printrbot Play and flexible filament, plus I had a spare plastic extruder from my pre release testing of it. Took around 15 minutes to install and now it's printing like a dream. Just have to whip up a part cooling fan mount and an extruder cooling fan, then it's 100% done.

I'm printing some modified legs that I can put a TPU pad on now, also decided to experiment (again) with PLA on a bare glass bed with a brim. Haven't done this kind of experimenting in a while. So far so good!
