Why would Repetier Server be advantageous?

Postby RetireeJay » 2016-Sep-Fri-16-Sep

The latest version of Repetier Host tries to tell me that it would be a huge advantage for me to use Repetier Server. But I don't understand why. Can someone explain?
Why bother with the hassle of "setting up" the dimensions, COM port, etc of my printer all over again; Repetier Host is already set up!

If I used it, I would be running two processes for the printer on my Windows computer instead of one. Repetier Host has given me absolutely no problems communicating with my printer, so what's the point of adding another layer? I do not have, and do not plan to have, a Raspberry Pi or any such auxiliary computer just for the printer. And there has never been any negative impact of running a print via Repetier Host on any other thing that I want to do with my computer; I've had as many as 10 programs active in the Task Bar and Repetier Host doesn't hiccup and my other programs seem to run at full speed.

It might be that I could check the status of a print by using my smart phone, but again, what's the point? Every time I've had a print fail, it's because of jamming in the extruder or the print lifting off the bed, and the printer doesn't know about these things; it just keeps plugging along - so the "status report" is meaningless. I'm going to be checking on the print every 20 minutes or so anyway.

I definitely won't be starting prints "remotely"; I always am very careful to get the extruder heated up to printing temperature and manually extrude 20mm or so of filament so it's fully primed, and then pull the extruded waste away from the printer before the print starts. Maybe it's just the fact that I use T-Glase and NinjaFlex, but I can't imagine starting up a print without doing that procedure in person because there's so much ooze. I really can't figure out why anyone would ever want to start a print remotely. If there's a previous print on the bed, you've got to clear it off in person before starting the next print. And if you have got your printer all ready to print with a good supply of filament, a clean bed, and so on, why would you then walk away and start the print an hour later from your smart phone?
