adaptor so I can use laptop power brick with simple metal

Postby jayo » 2018-Sep-Sat-11-Sep

I bought a used Simple Metal with heated bed. It came with an ATX style power supply.

The machine has the Rev. F Printrboard with a 6-pin connector from the board to a female 6-pin connector (with wires about a foot long), so that the ATX power supply can be easily connected/disconnected.

I want to be able to power the machine with a laptop-style 12V 6A brick for when I'm taking the printer around for classroom demos (I won't be using the heated bed when powered this way), since it is much smaller, thus easier to pack.

What I want/need is either:

a. a 6-Pin to "laptop brick connector" (barrel jack? I'm not sure of the right name) cord that is short and I could connect directly to the Printrboard.
b. an adapter from the 6-Pin connector (suitable for an ATX supply to plug into) to the laptop 'barrel jack', that would connect to my cord outside the machine

Do either of these things exist? I don't know what search terms to use to find one.

If not, any hints on how to make one? Connector names, wire gauges, words of encouragement, etc.

I feel like the connector I want was probably shipped with RevF machines without heated beds, but I sure don't know how to get one!

thanks.

A lot of people did the heatbed upgrade. So I'm sure there are some of the barrel to 6 pin cables if they bothered to keep them.

2.1mm barrel jacks and 6 pin ATX extension cables are cheap on Amazon. You could certainly solder up what you need with those two parts.

If you're in the States, PM your address to me and I'll mail this one recently taken from a Play upgraded to heated bed. You'll likely need to also use your current short ATX jumper for this to reach the board, but it should serve your need.

Since you already have a 6-pin to 6-pin "pigtail", I STRONGLY suggest using that pigtail to bring the wires out from your board for access by whichever external power supply you want to use. That way, you can plug in the ATX supply the way it SHOULD be plugged in, with all 6 wires making contact. And when you want to use the laptop with the barrel jack, use the adapter but plug it into that pigtail.

If you run the full current for the heated bed (which could be over 20 Amps) through a barrel jack, I'm afraid you will overload it - or the pair of wires connected to it.

Thanks for all the help. I've PM'ed novice (thank you!), and will be prepared to solder up an adapter if that falls through. I appreciate the advice to keep the "pigtail" on and plug in the barrel adaptor outside the machine, will do. I'll be very careful not to use the heated bed without power connected through six wires.
