Jr Upgrade options?

Postby WWorley » 2015-Sep-Sun-19-Sep

I've tried searching the topic but haven't found any clear details as to what i can do, i think there used to be an upgrade from jr to jr metal or something like that but basically what i want to do is upgrade to a more solid platform as i bought my jr v1 i guess it is as i bought it when it first came out while i waited for my makibox to come, sad story with the makibox once i finally did get it and 25% of the parts on it are junk and break and was never able to get it to print a single thing. Now my jr has served me well and i've printed a handful of times with it but it's wooden parts are now warped from sitting around i guess, so my question is can i use the good stuff like motors, switches, extruder to put into another kit that is an upgrade for the other printers?

Links to parts or kits i should buy would be great but if it's even possible i guess is the more important mater as i'd rather stick with the printrbot brand and not buy one of the other simple assembled printers like the m3d which is only $350 so i'd like to stay below that in terms of cost.

thanks for your comments and help

You can upgrade from Jr. to Simple Metal. You can find the upgrade kit on eBay sometimes, or you can submit request to Printrbot. The name of the upgrade kit is Simple Makers 1405 to Simple Metal upgrade kit. It's $299. You can also buy Simple Makers 1405 to Printrbot Play upgrade kit for $199 from printrbot.com. You can request it from printrbot.com, or buy it on eBay. If you are interested in upgrading to Printrbot Play, I have an upgrade kit. You will need some additional parts, like aluminum direct drive extruder, but you can print it, by getting STL file from thingiverse.com. You will also need auto-leveling sensor, but I have a spare one if you need it. You will have to print some plastic pieces, and your metal rods might work, but you might need a replacement rod for the Z axis (it's thinner). I still have my Jr. and I really like that printer, but it's been sitting since last year because I got Simple Metal. I am on my third Simple Metal right now - got the new one with Revision F5 Printrboard.

hi thanks for this great information.
I was almost giving up. I have seen this on ebay.

Printrbot-Play-Y-axis-upgrade-with-Heated-Bed-option
eBay item number:272086723370

Will i be able to upgrade an original Pritrbot Jr V1 (1307) with this kit?

Also interested in the parts that you have. i.e. upgrade kit, auto-leveling sensor.

do i need i upgrade the controller board?

thanks so much for this post.

this is the response i got from the company:

Hello Greg, Please see inline reply below
-I would like to upgrade my Printrbot jr v1 (1307). what are my options?
Unfortunately we do not have an upgrade for the Jr printer, our website would have the latest upgrades that are available
I apologize for the inconvenience

Not sure how feasible this is for you, but I have all the mechanical parts (metal frame, pulleys, belts, linear rails, threaded rods, etc.) for a Metal Plus that I am not using and would be willing to sell. (For reference, this is the version currently for sale on printrbot.com). You would need to provide motors, electronics, hotend & extruder, and maybe some misc parts. If you are comfortable with assembling a machine from parts, doing some wiring and (potentially) sourcing any extra needed parts on your own then this could be a good option. Send me a private message if you are interested and we can discuss in more detail.
