Regions

Postby plexus » 2011-Dec-Mon-18-Dec

I am a little hesitant to create a forum for every country, province/state and city. So lets start with this, by country/region. If you want a specific country called out, let me know and I will add it. It makes sense for Europe. I think perhaps for the USA maybe its regional like east coast, west coast, etc. Do you really want 50+ forums one for each state? (I don't). But let me know in this forum what makes sense. for now use the buckets created and we'll refine as we go.

Hello Plexus ,

It was a great job to create this forum ! thank's a lot !

I'm French , and i thought that could be a good idea to create sub-forums just by languages .
But, in a first time you could only create a survey by languages : if a language has a lot of responses you could create the sub-forum ! :) Q.E.D. !

Hi there. That is what I think I will do with this forum: I will change/add the forums as needs dictate. so far the forums seem to be ok for now but i can see adding more if more people join and there is more activity here.

Hi Plexus.
I thing that it would be fine to state "very loudly", that this regional forums are only for organizing people. I thing will do no good if the people and it's knowledge get's split all around these regional forums in various languages. I'm little worried that each region will tend to "play on his own sand pit" and the sharing may get worse.
I think that it will be better to have all the talks that may be interesting also for people from other countries in English.

In order to divide the US into a reasonable number of groups, someone is going to have to define the groups or else we will end up with a group or more for each state.

I propose that we start of with the 9 US Census Divisions for groups, and if we need finer or coarser divisions later we can deal with that then.

The Census Divisions are (from Wikipedia):

(New England) Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut
(Mid-Atlantic) New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey
(East North Central) Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio
(West North Central) Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa
(South Atlantic) Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida
(East South Central) Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama
(West South Central) Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana
(Mountain) Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico
(Pacific) Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii

I strongly agree with Badger that try to limit the regional groups discussions should be limited to get togethers, shows, other meetings and regional co-ordination. An exception being that non-English speakers would be able to use their regional forum to post in their native language.

This is a technical forum that covers a limited set of topics, so even if a person's English is weak, it may be adequate. The worse thing that could happen to someone speaking poor English here is that they might be mistaken for an American.
