Threaded rods suitable to upgrade a 2013 simple?

Postby AnotherCastle » 2014-May-Sat-15-May

I received a 2013 simple this past Christmas and I have been upgrading it ever since. I'm to the point now where I've done the X axis and parts are on their way for the Y, all belt-driven (by the way, thanks Jon Lawrence!). I've decided that I should also upgrade the Z axis to allow for taller prints, but I'm having some trouble finding information as to the specifics of the threaded rod the simple uses. I don't really want to do the XL upgrade as I already have most of the other materials necessary for the upgrade sitting around, can anyone tell me what the technical specifics are of the rod? Or perhaps an item number on McMaster or Amazon? Thanks!

I believe the item is 1/4-16" threaded rod. I grab item #99030A032 from the McMaster Website. I hope it works when i finally use it. For the 8mm Linear Shaft/Rod. You can Search for the one on Amazon by VXB. I used those for my X-Axis and they work like a charm.

Correct. 8MM Linear motion smooth rods, and 1/4-16 for the threaded rod.

I got the 12" rods on mcmaster: http://www.mcmaster.com/#general-purpos ... ds/=s7jkei

They're not as smooth as the printrbot rod, but it works. I didn't need 3 feet of rod lol.

I use 5/16ths threaded rod for my plus but m8 or m6 is preferred as the steps per mm break down to a better number. 3/8ths is also good if you can't get metric but the plus platform used 5/16ths before they switched to acme rod. You can also use 5/16tha smooth rod as it is equal to 8mm.

The Simple uses 1/4-16 acme rod so it's not a regular threaded rod. If you get a regular threaded rod that's the reason why it's not as smooth.

I've found that 5/16ths threaded rods with brass nuts work great. I've tested a couple different kinds of acme rods and there really isn't a noticeable difference. If you can get acme rods for cheap than snag em but in my experience they really are not worth the extra cash.
