bad tops of my prints

bad tops of my prints

Postby Sablebadger » 2014-Feb-Thu-00-Feb

So I have a simple (ordered around christmas, delivered late january) that works great for most things I've done with it so far.

the one consistent thing is that top of any print over about 1.5" gets less and less "tight", even sloppy looking.
I've seen this in varying degrees on about 5 prints now.

I dug through the top 2-3 pages of threads in each troubleshooting area but didn't see anything like this.

Is it getting too hot? something else?

Overall this printer has been great right out of the box, so I'd like to figure this out so I can keep making awesome prints.

There are many possible reasons, heat, speed, extruder issues, etc. If you could post pictures of the parts in question, this would go a long way to help diagnose the issue. What speeds & accelerations are you are using and is the fan in use?

Here are two different prints of the same model (cuddling cats) in two different filaments.
Red = came with my printrbot.
Blue = PLA from Matterhackers

Setting 200 degrees, .3 lay height. pretty much everything else standard settings as specified in the manual.

Note how the top of the ear is mess up in both cases.

Speed is normal default speed that comes with the manual PDF I downloaded from printrbot for getting started.

No accelerations that I know of, I haven't messed with my settings much.

Fan is working just fine, and cooling is enabled.

Kind of looks like over extrusion. Re-calibrate your extruder. Here's my latest print(before my Printrbot Simple died yesterday :/)

I do my first layer at 195c, and the rest at 190.
PLA only.
