Adding the 2nd small fan for 13S...

Postby tchaerlach » 2017-Feb-Thu-20-Feb

I have a Plus Metal and my ceramic hot end kept jamming and giving me problems, so I ordered the 13S replacement hot end, and the small 30mm fan with the wiring splitter. Swapping in the hot end was trivial, but I don't see a coupling on my fan wires for my existing fan. Has anyone had one without a coupling on it, and is it possibly hidden under the woven wiring harness? Or am I looking at soldering in this thing...which I honestly don't want to do unless I have to.

You don't want to splice the new fan into the same circuit as the other one. The new fan is supposed to be on all the time (or at least all the time the hot end is above 50C or so); it cools the finned metal part of the hot end. The other fan is controllable for cooling the print in the immediate vicinity of the nozzle. It may take some creativity to find a way to feed the new fan.

Brass threaded rods (5/16" X 18) & nuts for Z axis
GT2 belts & pulleys
Cable chain to reduce probability of fatigue failure in wires
E3D V5 Hot End, 0.4mm nozzle, also 0.8 and 0.25 in use occasionally
PB fan mount + 40mm fan -- using printed mount adapter, not the E3D supplied fan
Injection molded extruder gears

Ugh, ok.

I'm also seeing differing posts about that second small fan, is it 100% necessary to use it?

According to Printrbot's own web site, yes, the fan is required. https://printrbot.com/shop/ubis-13-s-hot-end/

Yep, trust me, I've read everything I can find on their official site...and here's the page that shows fan wiring:

https // printrbot zendesk com/hc/en-us/articles/211027983

(Sorry for the goofy non-URL, apparently I can't post URLs as a new user)

I have the Rev 5 board, which uses the splitter in their diagram...but the fan they have on the machine is directly connected to the board, there's no coupler on the fan itself.

Yes you need the fan, If you have an atx power supply, you can wire the fan directly using one of the molex connectors, that way when you turn your power supply on, the fan is on for the Ubis 13s hot end. check your pin outs for power, the molex is usually:

wire #1 +12v for the yellow
wire #'s 2 and 3 are common ground for the black wires
and wire #4 +5v for the red

CHECK IF YOU ARE NOT SURE !
